The origin of this luxuriant forest goes back to a volcanic eruption dating from year 6 of the Joukan era (864 AD) where lava fertilized the ground between 1,200 and 1,300 meters in altitude. The land extends over thirty kilometers and is known for the impossibility too use a compass in certain areas, as well as for its popular suicide grounds
